Mass Opposition to NATO Madrid Summit
No to NATO! Dismantle NATO!
Thousands of people participated in actions to protest the NATO summit taking place in Madrid, Spain from June 28 to 30. Counter Summit events were held in Madrid itself on June 24 and 25 on the theme No NATO! Bases Out! The Counter Summit ended with an estimated 5,000 people marching through the streets of Madrid on Sunday June 26 calling for the elimination of NATO bases in Europe and the abolition of NATO.
Protest rallies during the NATO summit itself were banned. Over 10,000 police were mobilized, turning Madrid into an armed camp to protect the NATO leaders from having to experience the people’s condemnation of their war preparations.
Elsewhere, in Germany for example, the Stop Airbase Ramstein organization held its eighth annual protest against the presence of the U.S. military base on German soil. Stop Airbase Ramstein has held annual protests there since 2015. Hundreds of protesters joined in a week long encampment from June 19 to 26 near the largest American air base outside the U.S. It is a base of military occupation and a seat for NATO activity. It coordinates all NATO weapons shipments destined for Ukraine, for example, and is a staging ground for troops and armaments to be flown to combat zones in the Middle East and Africa. The week of activities at Ramstein concluded with about 500 people blocking an entrance to the base and demanding the closure of Ramstein and removal of all U.S. bases from Germany.
In cities across Canada rallies, information pickets, and virtual meetings are being held to condemn the NATO Strategic Concept 2022 summit, condemn the war-mongering and war preparations and demand that NATO be disbanded.
