U.S. Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act
NATO’s political wing, the Atlantic Council, held a “Front Page” event on April 29 at which two U.S. senators spoke on the topic of “next moves to prevent a Russian victory” in Ukraine. Congress is likely to offer significant support for Ukraine against Russia in response to the Biden administration’s request for $33 billion in new aid, they said, adding that the U.S. might further arm neighbouring states .
The two senators who spoke at the meeting, John Cornyn (R-TX) and Ben Cardin (D-MD), co-sponsored the Ukraine Democracy Defense Lend-Lease Act. The law has cleared both houses of Congress and is now awaiting Biden’s signature to become law. The Lend-Lease plan evokes World War II efforts to arm Britain against Nazi aggression. “The two senators detailed a bipartisan strategy to send the message that U.S. support for Ukraine will be as unflinching as the Ukrainians have been in their defence against Russian aggression,” news reports said.
