Mercenaries in the Pay of Private Military Contractors Sent to Fight in Ukraine
News reports indicate that more and more mercenaries from private military contractors in the U.S. and NATO countries are being sent to fight in Ukraine. The main private military contractors in the U.S. are Academi (formerly known as Blackwater and notorious for its war crimes in Iraq), Cubic and DynCorp.
Two private military contractors of Turkish origin with European citizenship told Middle East Eye that there has been a sharp increase in postings by private military contractors in the U.S. and Europe for military work in Ukraine. They said that as of March 2, the number of mercenaries going to Ukraine exceeded 1,000.
Russian Defence Ministry spokesman Major General Igor Konashenkov at a press briefing on March 3, stated in no uncertain terms that if taken prisoner they would not be treated as prisoners of war. “The best thing that awaits foreign mercenaries upon detention is criminal prosecution. We urge citizens of foreign countries planning to go to fight for the Kiev nationalist regime to think seven times before travelling, ” Konashenkov said.
