June 1 – Ontario Injured Workers Day
Justice for Injured Workers!
Join injured workers for a rally at Queen’s Park on June 1, Ontario Injured Workers’ Day. In addition to the central rally in Toronto rallies are being held in Thunder Bay, London and Windsor. Organized by the Ontario Network of Injured Workers’ Groups and their allies, the rallies once again highlight the demand of injured workers that their right to full compensation when injured or made ill at work be recognized.
Injured workers will once again bring forward the demands of their Workers’ Comp Is a Right Campaign: No cuts to compensation based on phantom jobs!, Listen to injured workers’ treating healthcare professionals! and Stop cutting benefits based on “pre-existing conditions”! They also reiterate that all workers must be covered under the workers’ compensation system, and demand protections for injured workers’ benefits after they reach retirement age.
This year marks the 41st anniversary of the day in 1983 when injured workers and their allies converged on the Ontario Legislature where the government was holding hearings to prepare attacks on the injured workers’ compensation system. Over 3,500 people came to address the hearings, forcing the government to hold them on the lawn of Queen’s Park. This resulted in the government backing down on its main attacks at the time. Since then, June 1 has been maintained as a day to celebrate injured workers’ collective strength and resilience, as each year injured workers and their allies return to the Legislature to speak out about their conditions and their demands.
