2022 Rim of the Pacific War Exercises
Canada Committing Crimes Against the Peace in Asia Pacific
Canada is a participant in RIMPAC 2022. Beyond taking part in these war preparations, Canada continues to play a detestable role in the Asia Pacific in lockstep with U.S. imperialism, in places where the Canadian military has no business being.
A press release from the Department of National Defence (DND) informs that on June 14, HMCS Vancouver and HMCS Winnipeg and their helicopter air detachments “departed for a five-month deployment in the Indo-Pacific region.” DND says, “Canada is deploying two frigates to work with allies and like-minded partners and to support government objectives to uphold the rules-based international order and international law.”
Canada has adopted the fraud of a “rules-based international order” lock, stock and barrel and repeats it like a broken record to justify what cannot be justified.
“The initial phase of the deployment will involve HMCS Vancouver and Winnipeg participating in the Exercise Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2022 […] Following the exercise, the ships will deploy for an additional four months until December 2022, on Operations PROJECTION and NEON, through which Canada contributes to regional peace and stability. The Canadian frigates will conduct numerous port visits and participate in multinational exercises under Operation PROJECTION, as well as contributing to collective efforts to monitor United Nations Security Council sanctions on North Korea under Operation NEON.”
Operation PROJECTION is a broad catch-all operation, in which the Canadian Navy has operated in the Asia-Pacific, Euro-Atlantic and West Africa regions since 2018. A 2021 DND press release describes its overarching aims as follows: “As identified in Canada’s defence policy, Strong, Secure, Engaged, the Asia-Pacific region is increasingly important to Canadian security and prosperity. Canada is committed to being a reliable partner in the region and upholding the rules-based international order.
“Operation (Op) PROJECTION contributes to making the world more secure, prosperous, and stable. It also demonstrates the Canadian Armed Forces’ (CAF) readiness to support Canada’s values and interests around the world, as well as those of our allies and partners.”
Operation NEON is especially heinous activity by the Canadian Navy, part of the naval blockade against the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) instigated by the U.S. in 2018 aimed at regime change and negating the DPRK’s right to be. Far from upholding international law as DND claims, Operation NEON is a crime against the peace, the most serious war crime under international law.[1]
Canadians and Quebeckers have long demanded that Canada be a force for peace in the world and reject its role as an appeaser of U.S. imperialism. CPC(M-L) calls on everyone to oppose Canada’s participation in RIMPAC 2022 and for an end to Operations PROJECTON and NEON.
More than ever, as the U.S. imperialists are preparing to visit ever more aggression and war on the peoples of the world, the time is now to make Canada a zone for peace and make sure these disasters do not come to pass!
