Global Climate Strike September 15-17

Join Global Days of Action

This September, people around the world will take to the streets in a Global Climate Strike to demand a rapid, just, and equitable end to the use of fossil fuels. These actions take place as world leaders gather at the UN in New York for the UN General Assembly and a Climate Ambition Summit at UN headquarters on September 20. A march is organized in New York city September 17.

In Canada and Quebec, after a season of devastating wildland fires, local organizers will lead rallies in 55 cities from coast to coast demanding that governments take action to address the root causes of the devastating climate crisis the results of which Canadians have experienced this summer.

Organizers of the Global Fight to End Fossil Fuels state:

“For decades, people and communities globally have sounded the alarm about the dangers of destructive coal, oil, and gas industries. Across the world, people are fighting back against the fossil fuel industry: we’re resisting the development of new pipelines, mines and infrastructure; we’re demanding that financial institutions stop funding fossil fuels; we’re pushing for a rapid, just and equitable phase out of all fossil fuels; we are fighting back against unproven technologies that don’t address the root cause of the climate crisis, and we’re demanding that big oil, coal and gas companies are held accountable and pay for the harm they cause.”

Fridays for Future in their callout for the Global Climate Strike states:

“The Global Climate Strike is part of the truly global effort to End The Era of Fossil Fuels. This is a call to action from Indigenous and First Nations, youth activists, civil society organizations, social movements, feminist and migrant rights groups, trade unions, faith institutions, academic centres, health institutions, people of all genders and backgrounds, everywhere. Join us on September 15 and 17, 2023. We need all hands on deck to win this fight.”

Actions on September 15

Tens of thousands of climate activists took part in actions on September 15 as actions begin worldwide.

In Vienna, Austria, members of the student climate awareness group Last Generation sat down in front of parliament, and speakers called on government to end the use of oil and gas and pass laws to save the natural environment.

In Berlin Germany, thousands of people gathered at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin and marched in a long procession through the city’s government district.

In Quezon City, the Philippines, activists lay down in front of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources in protest, and held signs demanding fossil fuels be phased out.

In Stockholm, Sweden, climate activists gathered in front of Parliament next to the Royal Palace where King Carl XVI Gustaf was celebrating his 50th anniversary on the throne. News reports say their chants about climate justice could be heard in the palace courtyard as the king watched the changing of the guard during the golden jubilee celebrations.

In Congo, dozens joined a protest march through the city of Goma, shouting slogans and waving banners and placards calling for an end to corporate control of fossil fuels. The Congolese government caused an uproar among environmentalists last year by putting 30 oil and gas blocks up for auction, including 13 blocks crisscrossing through protected areas and national parks.
