The Nobel Peace Project is an international Mail Art initiative founded over 20 years ago in Nobel, Ontario by artists Susan Gold/Smith and AG Smith as a response to the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia.

In 2020, for the first time, the Nobel Peace Project has taken on a theme directly connected to the Nobel Peace Prize and is calling for submissions to celebrate and support the nomination of Cuba’s Henry Reeve International Medical Brigade for the award in 2021.

The project’s co-founders say honouring the nomination of Cuba’s Henry Reeve Brigade is particularly fitting because Mail Art operates outside the market economy as an alternative to art being viewed as a marketable object, not unlike Cuba’s international medical cooperation which they say “proliferates peace, justice, and the concept of a non-marketable economy for medical treatment internationally.”

An open call for submissions has been issued in English, Spanish and French. It states in part, “Bring back honour to the Nobel Peace Prize! through the recognition of internationalism, justice and good health for people of the world leading to world peace.” The call points out that the Henry Reeve Brigade, marking its 15th anniversary in 2020, continues its good work under the multiple attacks of the Trump administration and devastating U.S. blockade of Cuba, currently sending contingents to many countries who request their assistance in fighting COVID-19.

The village of Nobel, named for the Swedish chemist Alfred Nobel, was the site of the CIL munitions plant which manufactured cordite for explosives used in WWI, WWII, and in Vietnam. The plant is closed, but over the years Nobel has become the site for hundreds of mailed images of peace that have proliferated into scores of exhibitions and printed documentations.

There will be an exhibition in one ten park’s WINDOWS on WINDSOR. Printed documentation will be sent out after the exhibition to all participants.
