Iran Launches Unprecedented Missile Attack on Israel

Resistance Forces Seize Initiative to Defeat U.S./Zionist Genocide and Terror

During the night of October 1, Iran launched an unprecedented barrage of more than 180 missiles at Israel. Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) said its attack was in response to deadly Israeli attacks against the people in Gaza and Lebanon, as well as the assassinations of Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, Secretary-General of Hezbollah and the IRGC commander Abbas Nilforoushan in Beirut on September 27, as well as the killing of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran in July.

IRGC statements said that the missiles were aimed at "vital military and security targets" in Israel, specifically at three military bases in the Tel Aviv area. The headquarters of Israel's Mossad spy agency and the regime's Nevatim airbase that houses its F-35 warplanes were among the targeted sites by the IRGC, news reports indicate.

The attack, accompanied by a large-scale cyberattack, also employed Iran's new Fatah hypersonic ballistic missiles for the first time. The IRGC said that 90 per cent of the projectiles fired hit their targets.

Despite denials by Israel and the United States who claimed that their respective militaries worked together to shoot down most of the projectiles that were fired by Iran, video footage appeared to show the missiles falling on major cities and towns. The Israeli army said only a "few" hits were recorded in central and southern parts of the country while, according to Israel's emergency service, two people were injured from falling shrapnel in the Tel Aviv area.

U.S. National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan said the U.S. military "coordinated closely" with its Israeli counterparts to shoot down the projectiles. "U.S. naval destroyers joined Israeli air defence units in firing interceptors to shoot down inbound missiles," Sullivan told reporters at the White House. Sullivan said no deaths were reported in Israel: "In short, based on what we know at this point, this attack appears to have been defeated and ineffective," he said.

Palestine Chronicle reported the military spokesperson for Hamas, Abu Obeida saying, "The Iranian response that covered the entire geography of occupied Palestine [...] dealt a strong blow to the criminal occupation that thought that its rampage in the region and its aggression against its people could pass without punishment."

He said the Iranian retaliation was "an exceptional day in the history of the struggle." "The fires of the nation's resistance crossed in the skies of Palestine, and Tel Aviv was exposed to the strikes of the fighters from Yemen, Lebanon, Palestine, and Iran. This is a call to all the free people of the nation to make a share in the liberation of Palestine," Abu Obeida said.

Palestine Chronicle staff wrote:

"Indeed, the nature of the coordinated attack indicates that a year after the Israeli war and genocide in Gaza, coordination between all members of what is known as the 'Axis of Resistance' continues to operate at full capacity.

"In fact, the latest coordination exceeds that of military arrangements typically associated with the concept of the 'unity of the square,' to a high level of geostrategic coordination as well.

"The decisive Iranian response, and the interpretation of the attacks by various members of the 'Axis of Resistance,' as expressed in the words of Abu Obeida suggest that Israel's enemies have succeeded in restoring deterrence.

"The days ahead are likely to be decisive."

Remarks by Iranian President, Speaker of the Parliament and Spiritual Leader

In remarks to the weekly cabinet meeting of the government of Iran on October 2, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian said the Islamic Republic's retaliatory operation against Israel, dubbed Operation True Promise II, proved that the occupying regime's Iron Dome missile interception system is "more fragile than glass."

He stressed that Iran would give a more "crushing response" to any new Israeli mistake. "Iran does not seek war, yet it is not afraid of it either," he noted, emphasizing that the Islamic Republic knows no limits when it comes to protecting the security, authority and dignity of its people and the country.

"The latest retaliatory attack proved that Iran will never be joking about the honour and pride of its nation," he said.

The president said, "After the assassination of Martyr Haniyeh in Tehran, which was a clear violation of Iran's sovereignty and national security, the Western countries kept asking Tehran to exercise restraint, promising to immediately establish a ceasefire in Gaza."

Pezeshkian noted that, "The criminal and bloodthirsty Israeli regime not only continued to kill women and children, but also expanded the scope of its crimes to Lebanon, and the Western countries remained silent."

Pezeshkian also blasted the double standards and inaction of international organizations and the Western countries towards the criminal acts of the Israeli regime. He went on to say that Benjamin Netanyhau, the "criminal" prime minister of the Israeli regime, publicly threatened Iran at the United Nations General Assembly meeting, while other countries remained silent in the face of such behaviour.

Pezeshkian further expressed hope that peace and tranquility will be restored to the region and regional countries will get rid of criminals and oppressors.

The speaker of the Iranian parliament, Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, said on October 2 that Operation True Promise II shattered the Zionist regime's security myth and the Zionist entity is now a loser both in the battlefield and in the media war.

"The regime had already failed to evaluate the military prowess of Hezbollah, when it suffered another intelligence and security defeat as a result of the successful armed operation in Tel Aviv. It had not yet recovered from the setback, when its media allegations about purported victories were dismissed in the wake of the launch of Iranian missiles.

"[...] Last night, tyrants and warmongers, whose only strength is air strikes and terrorist operations, trembled with fear while Muslim nations and freedom-seekers of the world were filled with joy and hope.

"The enemy, which has tried to cover up its strategic failures with tactical victories and destroy the mental and structural foundations of the resistance front through psychological warfare, thought it had pulled the plug on Hezbollah with the assassination of Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah. It did not look forward to a Hezbollah much stronger than the past," Qalibaf pointed out.

The Iranian parliament speaker further noted that the Zionist regime, which sees its existence and survival in jeopardy, may think of repeating its previous mistakes and launching an act of military aggression against Iran.

"It should know that we have prepared ourselves for any possible insanity, and devised an elaborate plan. Our next response to any possible aggression will be at a very different level," he said, warning against an attack on Iran.

Qalibaf finally advised the United States, as the main sponsor of the Israeli regime, to further muzzle its rabid dog so that it neither harms itself nor causes serious trouble to its patron.

On October 2, the leader of the Islamic Revolution, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, met in Tehran with a group which included leading cadre, outstanding scientists and academics and top students from the University of Tehran entrance exams.

"In our region, the root cause of problems, which leads to conflicts, wars, concerns and hostilities and such like, results from the presence of the same people who claim to advocate peace and tranquility in the region; that is America and some European countries," Ayatollah Khamenei said.

"If they get themselves out of this region, beyond a shadow of doubt, these conflicts, these wars, these clashes will come to a complete halt, and the countries of the region will be able to govern themselves, govern their region, and live together in peace, blessing and prosperity."

Ayatollah Khamenei stressed that he would in the near future address the issues regarding the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.

U.S. Shores Up Armed Presence in Middle East

Confirming that the U.S. is fully involved in the escalation of Israel's aggression against Lebanon, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) reported on September 30 that it took "steps to further enhance the defense posture of U.S. forces throughout the Middle East region to deter aggression and mitigate the risk of a broader regional conflict."

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin reportedly spent the weekend providing guidance to his team and receiving updates on developments in the Middle East. The measures the DoD is taking include "ordering the USS Abraham Lincoln carrier strike group to remain in the U.S. Central Command area of operations past its regular rotation date; reinforcement of U.S. air defence capabilities; and using U.S. forces rotating into the region to augment rather than replace forces already there." A DoD spokesperson said that some of the augmented forces being sent to the region include F-16, F-15E and F-22 fighter aircraft, as well as A-10 attack aircraft and associated personnel, adding, "We believe that we need to have the capability in the region to defend our forces and – of course, if needed – to come to the defence of Israel."

Hezbollah in Full Command of Situation in Lebanon

Martyred Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah mourned and honoured in downtown Tehran, Iran, September 30, 2024.

Hezbollah's Deputy Secretary-General, Sheikh Naim Qassem gave a speech on Tuesday October 1 which confirmed that Hezbollah is in full command of the situation despite the brutal Israeli bombardments and assassination of its general-secretary Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and the martyrdom of other important leaders.

Sheikh Naim Qassem highlighted that the U.S. is supporting Israel with all its capabilities, noting that Israel is committing massacres in all areas of Lebanon, trying to leave no house untouched by its aggression. Despite the challenges, he assured that the resistance will not back down from Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah's positions and that the movement is following alternative plans for its leaders. He also said that Hezbollah will choose a new Secretary-General at the earliest opportunity. Sheikh Naim Qassem said the command and control system and the Mujahideen will continue with the same precision. Loss of leaders was anticipated, alternative plans were in place and "we are following them."

"Everyone is present in the field," he said. The Islamic resistance will continue to confront the Israeli enemy, supporting Gaza and Palestine, and defending Lebanon and its people. "I want to inform you that what we are doing is the minimum as part of the plan to follow up the battle. We know the battle may be long, and the options are open before us, and we will face any possibility. [...] We are doing everything we can and addressing the assassination of cadres with alternative resources. Israel has not been able to reach our military capability, and what its media says is a dream they have not reached and will not reach."

"[...] We will choose a Secretary-General for the party at the earliest opportunity according to the party's established mechanism for selection. We will fill the leadership and positions firmly, and be assured that the options will be easy. If anyone is waiting to see what will happen, I tell you that what is happening is under normal and natural follow-up. I thank the Lebanese who showed honorable national unity in confronting the crimes of Israel and America. [...] The unity that manifested among all sects and families in all regions is the cornerstone of Lebanon's pride. I thank the Lebanese government, political forces, municipalities, and all those who worked for standing with the truth. We are in one boat, but rest assured, God willing, victory is ours, and we have prepared what we have, and we need patience."

Hezbollah Responds to Israel's Incursions
Across Blue Line

Hezbollah dismissed as "false" Israel's claim on October 1 that its forces crossed into southern Lebanon.

The Lebanese resistance movement says its fighters are ready for a "direct confrontation" if Israeli troops enter. Spokesman Mohammed Afifi made the remarks in a statement, after the Israeli military announced its troops had entered southern Lebanon earlier in the day in preparation for a ground operation. Afifi went on to say that "no direct ground clashes have yet taken place between the resistance fighters and the occupation forces," emphasizing that the allegations are false. "Hezbollah fighters are ready for a direct confrontation with enemy forces that dare to or try to enter Lebanon to inflict casualties among them."

On October 2, the Lebanese military said an Israeli military force breached the border, reaching 400 metres (about a quarter of a mile) into Lebanese territory before withdrawing.

"An Israeli enemy force breached the Blue Line by approximately 400 metres into Lebanese territory in the areas of Khirbet Yaroun and the Aadeyseh, then withdrew after a short period," the army said.

The Blue Line is a reference to the demarcation border area that separates Israel and Lebanon.

A White House National Security (NSC) spokesperson told the Times of Israel that the limited raids that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) launched against Hezbollah posts on the Lebanese side of the Blue Line are "in line with Israel's right to defend its citizens and safely return civilians to their homes." "We support Israel's right to defend itself against Hezbollah and all Iranian-backed terror groups," the NSC spokesperson said.

U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd J. Austin III spoke with Israeli Minister of Defense Yoav Gallant on September 30, according to news reports. The reports say they "agreed on the necessity of dismantling attack infrastructure along the border to ensure that Hezbollah cannot conduct October 7-style attacks on Israel's northern communities. [...] He and Minister Gallant discussed the importance of ultimately pivoting from military operations to a diplomatic pathway to provide security and stability as soon as feasible. Austin and Gallant went on to threaten Iran with serious consequences if in the event Iran chooses to launch a direct military attack against Israel."

The Times of Israel reported this U.S. declaration as confirmation that "The Biden administration appears to express its support for the raids that the IDF began conducting late Monday night [September 29-30] into Lebanon targeting Hezbollah sites along the border."
