Chesnik Campaign Provided a Platform for People to Speak in Their Own Name
Laura Chesnik, MLPC member and independent candidate in Windsor-Tecumseh, in an interview with Ontario Political Forum following the June 2nd election, pointed out:
“My campaign provided a platform for people to break through the suppression of their views and voice. Its aim was to find ways for the electorate to speak for ourselves within the existing political system in which independent candidates are treated as expendable, just as the views of the electorate are.
“Through this campaign we have seen that the people are yearning for a break with the status quo and their lack of control over the process. More and more they are rejecting the cartel parties and the entire political process because they can see that it has nothing to do with them or solving the serious problems they and our society and world face. My campaign did not accept this status quo.
“I call on all those who vote and those who do not to join in so that together we can build an alternative in which it is the people who set the agenda and mandates by representing themselves directly in elections and between elections as well.”
