On the occasion of Remembrance Day, a collective in Calgary is organizing a tribute to the volunteers who served in the Mackenzie-Papineau Batallion during the Spanish Civil War. The collective has identified four Canadian veterans of the Spanish Civil War whose final resting place is in Calgary. The four men are: Arthur Ashplant, Andreas Varga, David Thornton, and William Gilmore Stewart. The program will commence at Queen’s Park Cemetery and then proceed to Union Cemetery, visiting the graves of all four volunteers.
