Brampton Town Hall
Support International Students and Post-Graduate Work Permit Holders
International students and members of the Post-Graduate Work Permit (PGWP) Committee are inviting the public to a Town Hall Meeting on January 19.
They have held a 24/7 encampment in Brampton for more than six-and-a-half months to protest changes by the federal government that drastically restrict their ability to work in Canada after graduation and qualify for permanent residency. This is after they and their families have massively indebted themselves to come to Canada and pay extortionate tuition fees.
The encampment underscores the urgent need for policy changes to address the challenges PGWP holders and international students face in seeking permanent residency in Canada. They and their supporters are calling on representatives from unions and community organizations to join the town hall to boost morale and highlight the widespread support for their just cause.
Organizations are asked to record and share a short video message in support of the encampment, which will be used to amplify the campaign across social media platforms and during public engagements.
They are also asked to call on their members to share information about the encampment and its aim through their own networks and to invite them to participate in the encampment and related activities.
The encampment organizers write:
“This is a critical juncture for us, and we believe that visible solidarity from all our allies will significantly strengthen our efforts. Let us stand together to advocate for fair and just policies that reflect the contributions and aspirations of international students in Canada.
“We are confident that your active participation will make a lasting impact. Please feel free to reach out to us at committeepgwp@gmail.com for any further information or to coordinate your involvement.”
