December 9
Ontario Injured Workers’ Rallies
There Is No Surplus Until There Is Full Compensation!
Join injured workers for rallies on December 9 in Toronto, Thunder Bay and Windsor demanding an end to giveaways of so-called surplus funds by the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB) as “rebates” to employers until all injured workers received full and just compensation.
On November 21, the WSIB announced a further $2.5 billion of what they are calling “rebates” and “rate reductions.” This is unacceptable! They are giving these handouts to corporations despite the fact that injured workers continue to struggle in poverty due to the WSIB’s denial of benefits, low rates of compensation and the fact that many workplaces are not covered by WSIB. This $2.5 billion is the latest in a series of handouts to employers which have totaled $18.6 billion since 2017, at the expense of workers injured or made ill on the job.
In conjunction with the rallies, injured workers’ organizations along with other organizations will release a document entitled What Injured Workers Need: A Community Response to WSIB’s $2.5 Billion Gift to Employers. In it, the injured worker community lays out what needs to be done to meet their most basic needs before any handouts to employers can take place. This is just the latest of many proposals made by injured workers on how to build a full and fair compensation system that meets the needs of workers.
