Signing of Armistice in the Korean War
A Great Victory Whose Significance Lives On
On July 27, 1953, the heroic forces of the Korean People’s Army and Chinese People’s Volunteer Army achieved victory by forcing the U.S. imperialists and their allies to come north of the 38th parallel to sign the Armistice Agreement that ended the fighting in the Korean War.
On the 70th anniversary of this historic date, the people of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) are holding grand celebrations and other activities. A delegation from the People’s Republic of China, led by Li Hongzhong, member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China and vice-chairman of the Standing Committee of the Chinese National People’s Congress, will take part in the events. A military delegation from the Russian Federation led by Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu is also paying a congratulatory visit to the DPRK on the occasion.
On July 25, Kim Jong Un, general secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea and president of the State Affairs of the DPRK, visited the Fatherland Liberation War Martyrs Cemetery on the occasion of the anniversary. He paid high tribute to the martyrs, saying that they honourably defended the sovereignty and security of the country and people at great cost and provided the precious ideological and moral heritage and tradition of victory as an steadfast cornerstone for the DPRK. He said that the victory of July 27, 1953 is of significance to all humanity, as it inflicted indelible disgrace and defeat on the U.S. imperialism and prevented a new world war.
Kim Jong Un also visited the martyrs cemetery of the Chinese People’s Volunteers (CPV) in Hoechang County of South Phyongan Province. During that visit he further elaborated on the significance of the DPRK’s victory in the war, saying that it was a hard fought war of justice to defend its dignity, honour and sovereignty as well as the world peace and security. It was an acute political and military confrontation with the imperialist forces which was waged on behalf of the peace-loving forces and progressive humankind. He stated that the great victory won by the peoples of the DPRK and China at the cost of their blood continues to show its vitality today.
He said that the noble sacrifice of the CPV martyrs, and the history and tradition of unity between the peoples of the two countries, would be immortal in the hearts of the Korean people. He said that the bonds of kinship forged in the sacred struggle in the service of the cause of anti-imperialist independence and socialism, that resolutely smashed the reactionary offensive of the imperialists by virtue of justice and truth, would be reliably carried forward through generations.
