President
Kim Il Sung, founder of theThe Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) was founded by the esteemed leader Kim Il Sung on October 10, 1945. It is a Party forged in the crucible of the Korean people's struggle to liberate their country, first from the Japanese occupiers in the first decades of the 20th century and then from the U.S. imperialists after WWII.
Kim Il Sung had already embarked on the road of revolutionary struggle in his teens to liberate his country and people from the Japanese imperialists. On October 17, 1926 he formed the Down-with-Imperialism Union. This was the starting point of founding a Juche-type revolutionary party, which differed from previous parties in Korea.[1]
While advancing the Juche-oriented line of the Korean revolution at the Kalun Meeting in June, 1930, Kim Il Sung illuminated the essential way of founding a revolutionary party. The most important thing, he said, was to found a party independently and by way of forming its grass-roots organizations first and enlarging and strengthening them, and to prepare for its founding in close combination with the anti-Japanese struggle.
Kim Il Sung then formed the Society for Rallying Comrades in early July 1930. This was the first Party organization comprised of the young communists of the new generation present at Kalun. This is how the prototype of the party organizations guided by the Juche ideal was born.
The anti-Japanese armed struggle waged under the guidance of Kim Il Sung served to both wage a liberation war to save the country and nation and found a revolutionary party of the working class. During the anti-Japanese armed struggle, the Party committee of the Korean People's Revolutionary Army was organized, making it possible to establish the system of guiding the party organizations at all levels and realize Party guidance over the Korean revolution as a whole.
A sound organizational backbone was built up and the solid unity and cohesion of the Party Committee ranks were consolidated. On the basis of the successes and experiences in party-building achieved during the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle, Kim Il Sung organized to move forward to founding the Party shortly after Korea's liberation on August 15, 1945. At last, on October 10, 1945, the WPK was founded with the fighters who had been tempered and trained during the anti-Japanese revolutionary struggle as its core and communists who had been active in various regions.
The founding of the WPK enabled the Korean people to victoriously carve out their destiny and usher in a new era of epochal changes by relying on their own vanguard force. Kim Il Sung's method of founding the WPK created a communist party capable of guiding the nation-building project of the DPRK despite very difficult conditions imposed by the U.S. imperialists and its allies, including Canada. Today, this Party is advancing victoriously along the road of accomplishing the cause of socialism by answering the call of history and overcoming all the difficulties which lie in its path.
On this occasion, National
Leader of the Communist Party of
Canada (Marxist-Leninist) Anna Di Carlo, sent a message of
greetings
and congratulations to Kim Jong Un, General Secretary of the
WPK, and
through him to the Party's Central Committee, members and the
Korean
people. Among other things
Ms. Di Carlo said the anniversary "Brings to mind the
magnificent
exploits and heroism of the Korean people and what can be
achieved
under the leadership of their Communist Party which has lofty
aims and
maintains the unity of its ranks and of the Korean people based
on
principle." She spoke of
CPC(M-L)'s deep respect for the WPK's leadership, today and
throughout
its history writing, "Kim Il Sung's exploits in founding the WPK
and of
Kim Jong Il in consolidating the WPK, both at crucial moments of
great
changes in the history of the Korean people and the world,
provide
lessons of great
significance on the role of the Party in uniting the people to
consolidate their nation-building projects and setting an
independent
people-centred course to fulfill the aims of the people." In
conclusion
she wrote, "The WPK addresses every situation by facing the
difficulties of the present on its
own terms, based on its own thought material and path. Always
the Party
plays a decisive role in providing the cadres and members with
orientation, training, political culture and discipline,
transmitted
through their work to the entire country. The results can be
seen in
the magnificent
achievements of the modern Democratic People's Republic of
Korea."

On October 9, a massive celebration was held at the May Day Stadium in Pyongyang to mark the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK). The event was attended by more than 100,000 people from Pyongyang and around the country that had come to mark the auspicious occasion. Invited dignitaries in attendance included Chinese Premier Li Qiang, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev and Communist Party of Viet Nam General Secretary To Lam. The celebration was also attended by representatives of other countries, members of the General Association of Korean Residents in Japan, the General Association of Koreans in China and the International Social Confederation of Koreans and others.
Following the raising of the flag of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) and the flag of the WPK, Kim Jong Un, General Secretary of the WPK and leader of the DPRK gave a militant and passionate speech in which he outlined the glorious history of the WPK as a revolutionary Party that has successfully built a modern socialist society by implementing the Juche outlook of mobilizing and relying on the people to solve the problems facing society at every stage. He pointed out that the unity of the Party and the people has created a modern socialist society which defends its ideals and principles and is making a significant contribution to advancing justice and peace internationally.
He profoundly thanked the people for their confidence in the WPK and trusting him as their leader and pledged to do his utmost to meet their expectations. He also called on the people of the DPRK to continue to rally around the WPK and redouble their efforts so as to achieve further victories in nation-building to ensure the well-being and prosperity of the people and the bright future of the country.
The event concluded with a gala including mass gymnastics and artistic performances celebrating the epic journey of the WPK over the last 80 years. Reports indicate that it was a beautiful spectacle which filled the participants with great joy and enthusiasm reflecting the finest spirit of the DPRK.
Besides the main event at the May First Stadium in Pyongyang, hundreds of other commemorative meetings to mark the anniversary were held across the country. In Pyongyang itself, several events took place in the run-up to the 80th anniversary celebration on October 9. This included the National Symposium on the 80th Anniversary of the WPK held at the People's Palace of Culture in Pyongyang where WPK officials discussed the achievements of the Party and paid special tribute to Kim Il Sung, the founder of the WPK and Kim Jong Il, who advanced and consolidated the work of the WPK following the death of Kim Il Sung in 1994. On October 8, Kim Jong Un presided over a meeting at the Party Founding Museum in Pyongyang where he called on the members of the Central Committee and other Party officials to maintain their vigilance and professionalism and spare no efforts in upholding the glorious traditions of the WPK, its high ideals and principles.
As well, several exhibitions to mark the occasion, highlighting advances in the economy, national defence and culture, are being held in Pyongyang. These include the massive "Development of Light Industry -- 2025" exhibition featuring hundreds of products of various light industries and the "National Defence Weapons Exhibition -- 2025" which displays the latest armaments developed in the DPRK. The Korean National Art Museum is hosting a fine art exhibition with photographs, posters and artwork celebrating the 80 years of the WPK.

Dear Pyongyang
citizens and overseas compatriots,
Dear foreign friends celebrating this holiday with us,
Comrades,
Today, as we mark the anniversary of our Party, we are celebrating this historic holiday with a grand meeting and looking back once again upon the sacred years. This is an expression of a sublime and sincere tribute our generation pays to the great Party-founding generation who brought about an epochal change in shaping the destiny of our country and people.
In the midst of the struggle to truthfully carry forward and develop the original ideals and spirit of the Party, a dignified and powerful socialist state, faithful to the dreams and ideals of the people, has been built on this land; great miracles and changes have been made decade after decade and century after century to the admiration of the world. This is the history of modern Korea under the leadership of the Party, which spans 80 years. [...]
I extend sincere congratulations and encouragement to all the Party members, other people and service personnel of our army, who are sending best wishes to this meeting from all parts of the country.
My warm congratulations go to congratulatory groups of Koreans in Japan, the General Federation of Koreans in China and the International Social Federation of Koreans, and to the delegates of other overseas organizations visiting their homeland and, through you, to all the overseas compatriots.
Also present at today's meeting are the heads of party and government and figures of several countries and delegates from international democratic organizations who are on a visit to Pyongyang with feelings of support to our Party and warm friendship with the Korean people.
I welcome you, dear friends, who are celebrating our Party's holiday with us and deepening the feelings of friendship, and extend my heartfelt thanks to you.
Comrades and friends,
The 80th anniversary of the WPK is a glorious milestone thanks to the immortal achievements it has made over the long years for the country and the people and for the times and history.
The founding of our Party did not simply mean the birth of a political party in a country; it was a political event that signalled the emergence on the stage of history of a new-type revolutionary party that would verify the righteousness of socialism and demonstrate its unique superiority and might.
From the days of building democracy, which coincided with its founding and the start of its leadership over the overall state and social life, to this day, the WPK has remained faithful to its responsibility and role as an engine of the revolution and guiding force of state administration and, in the course of this, has performed truly remarkable historic exploits.
By successfully leading the social transformation processes of several stages under the uplifted banner of the Juche idea, it has built on this land a genuine people's country with absolute prestige and national strength, a powerful country that comprehensively embodies the socialist ideas and ideals; it also has rendered a significant contribution to implementing the international cause for independence and justice." [...]
Following the establishment of the socialist system in our country, we found ourselves standing at the forefront of the most acute confrontation between the progressive and the reactionary and between socialism and imperialism. Given the geopolitical position of the country, our Party had to adopt a more resolute approach towards performing its mission of defending socialism; it had to give a strong impetus to implementing the cause of building the country's self-reliant defence capabilities. As the vicious schemes for isolating and stifling the country economically persisted from one century into the next, it had to cope with these schemes pro-actively and aggressively while pushing forward with the gigantic projects for socialist construction.
Particularly, amidst worldwide political upheaval in the 1990s, it had to defend our ideology and social system, and entering the new century, in order to cope with the growing nuclear war threats by the U.S. imperialists, it had to lead the people to make a new leap forward in socialist construction while simultaneously carrying on economic construction and build-up of the nuclear forces. [...]
In fact, maintaining the political power and defending the social system was a miracle itself, but our Party has taken on all those important tasks [...]
In every period and at every stage of the revolution and construction it has put forth scientific lines and policies to overcome manifold challenges and advanced along the unchangeable track of socialism. On this road, it has propelled the historic cause of building an independent and powerful state.
The significant events that have been recorded in history, as well as the amazing transformations that have been achieved by racing against time, testify to the scientific accuracy and vitality of our Party's revolutionary ideology and lines. As we can clearly see, they constitute a key factor in making substantial and rapid progress in the political, military, economic and cultural fields, particularly in external relations.
For its imperishable exploits the WPK has earned the envious prestige of being a revolutionary party providing seasoned and sophisticated leadership, a steel-strong party that achieves one victory after another, and a genuine people's party that faithfully serves them. [...]
To ensure that the ranks of the Party and the revolution achieve ideological oneness and organizational unity – this was what our Party defined as a major key to advancing the revolutionary cause along the road of victory. [...]
Not only in the initial period of nation building but also during the war and in the post-war years, our Party prioritized establishing the Juche orientation in ideology and equipping Party members and all the people with the Party's guiding ideology and revolutionary lines. At the same time, it directed primary efforts to strengthening its grass-roots organizations, building up Party ranks as an elite force and improving the fighting efficiency and vitality of its organizations at all levels.[...]
In the course of solving the problems arising in the revolution and construction and overcoming difficulties, our Party has proactively explored and applied proper approaches and styles of work for making the most of the people's revolutionary zeal and creativity.
Many revolutionary methods of guidance and people-oriented styles of work developed by our Party have been effective in uniting the masses under a single banner, giving full play to their revolutionary and patriotic enthusiasm, and bringing about uninterrupted innovations and amazing miracles on the strength of collectivism and mass heroism while overcoming all sorts of obstacles.
Always aware of and guarding against the possible budding of authoritarianism and a number of other problems which are likely to separate the Party from the masses as its ruling years get longer and one generation is replaced by another, we have made sure that an absolute spirit of serving the people prevails across the Party. [...]
Our Party has struggled under the uplifted banner of independence and socialism against every adversity; this has made an enormous historic contribution to implementing the common cause of mankind for justice and peace. [...]
Our Party and government are still coping with our adversaries' ferocious many political and military pressures by pursuing harder-line policies, holding fast to firm principles and employing brave, unflinching countermeasures. This is powerfully propelling the growth of the progressive camp against war and hegemony, and the international prestige of our Republic as a faithful member of the socialist forces and a bulwark for independence and justice that is further increasing with each passing day.
Comrades and friends,
There is a key to the cause of a victorious party.
It, in a nutshell, is that the party has shared everything with a great people.
The history of working for the people, the history of relying on the strength of the people, is precisely the factor behind all victory and glory our Party has won.
The 80-year history of our Party can be most accurately represented only when it is based on the history of the people; the history of its energetic guidance and the imperishable achievements it has made can identify its secret fairly and squarely only when it is explained by the great, immortal aphorism of "Together with the people." [...]
As it has led the advance of history on the strength of the people's commitment and efforts, all projects, which our Party has planned for the revolution and construction, have turned into the affairs of the people themselves and reached successful completion.
Those who have brought about all the important events guaranteeing victory and success in our cause for all ages are all the people of this country, the great Korean people, including our heroic working class, agricultural workers and intellectuals. [...]
A party that is among the people, not standing above them, a party that shares with them aspirations and ambitions, wisdom and strength, and weal and woe, can never disintegrate and does not lose vigour and vitality. [...]
I would like to offer thanks once again to our great people who have always injected strength and wisdom into our Party and devoted pure minds and diligent efforts with belief in victory as well as in the Party, while pioneering the arduous and yet sacred socialist cause for as long as 80 years. [...]
Comrades,
The glorious 80-year history of our Party is encouraging us to wage a more gigantic and fulfilling struggle.
Let us advance with redoubled courage and confidence for the review of a great history which will be filled with greater glory and pride than the great 80 years which the Party and the people pioneered with one mind and body and glorified with victories, and for the final accomplishment of the socialist cause when the dreams and ideals of our people will be realized.
Concluding my speech, I offer my humble wishes for peace and well-being of our beloved people.
I extend my sincere wishes for cordial harmony and happiness to all the families in the country.

Important Projects Celebrate Party Founding
State-of-the-art
Pyongyang General Hospital, inaugurated on October 7, 2025
Many significant projects undertaken to meet the needs and well-being of the people of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) have been completed in advance of the 80th anniversary celebrations of the founding of the Workers' Party of Korea (WPK). At its Eighth Congress, the WPK in 2021 adopted a plan with a focus on regional economic development. Subsequently, the 10th session of the 14th Supreme People's Assembly held on January 15, 2024 gave regional projects priority through the 20×10 Regional Development Policy. These include plans for the building of factories in 20 cities and counties and large-scale offshore model fish and seafood farms to increase seafood production by 2034, with some projects completed and others underway.
The aim of the 20×10 Policy is to raise the overall living standards of the people in these areas and establish models for future development in the people-centred socialist economy of the DPRK. The government's plans also include the construction of hospitals and health facilities, recreational facilities and grain distribution centres in various regions.
These initiatives are in addition to the 50,000 new apartments that have been completed in Pyongyang and more than 25,000 new housing units that have been built across the country, upgrading housing in rural areas and providing free housing to people who had lost their homes due to flooding. All housing in the DPRK is publically-owned and available at no cost to the people.
Key to the successful completion of these projects has been the WPK's mass mobilization of the Party's regional organizations, construction technicians, and soldiers of the Korean People's Army. They work closely with people at the local level to ensure that their needs are incorporated into the new developments.
Under the slogan "Let Us Help the People!" Korean People's Army construction units have completed or are in the process of completing factories and other facilities in Usi, Tongsin, Kyŏngsŏng, Orang and other counties. In addition to building factories and other facilities, as part of the Party's afforestation plans, tens of thousands of trees and shrubs of various types have been planted to enhance the physical appearance of the new facilities.
The Korean Central News Agency reports that along with new
rural and urban development, workers in various industries
including
steel and coal, electric power, building materials, forestry and
other
sectors of the national economy have stepped up production.
Those
involved directly in production
for the 20×10 Plan are working hard to ensure that materials
needed for the new construction are delivered in a timely
manner.
In
addition to implementing the plans discussed above, the WPK is
creating
other models. The Pyongyang General Hospital, a state-of-the-art
facility, was officially inaugurated by Kim Jong Un, General
Secretary
of the WPK and President of State Affairs of the Democratic
People's
Republic of Korea on the occasion of the 80th anniversary of the
founding of the WPK. The hospital was built despite great
difficulties
caused mainly by the decades-long U.S. blockade and interference
against the DPRK. It will serve as a model to elevate and
modernize
medical facilities across the DPRK, all of which provide the
people
with free health care of the highest quality.

People's Health Care Needs Given Priority
Kim
Jong Un, General Secretary of the Workers’ Party of Korea and

Pyongyang General Hospital on February 27, 2025. The hospital
was
officially inaugurated on October 7, 2025.
During the pandemic five years ago, the Workers' Party of Korea and its General Secretary Kim Jong Un made plans to modernize the entire health care system in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK). One of the key developments in this regard was the building of the state-of-the-art Pyongyang General Hospital which was inaugurated by Kim Jong Un on October 7, 2025, to mark the 80th anniversary of the founding of the Workers' Party of Korea.
At the inauguration Kim Jong Un said, amongst other things:
"Comrades,
"The long-awaited moment has come at last, when we are proclaiming the inauguration of this hospital. I am proud that we have achieved the first result of the public health revolution, which our Party decided to launch in order to protect our valuable lives and inject vigour into our precious living. I also find it intensely moving that we have managed to translate into reality something that was one of our ideals some years ago.
"Modern medical facilities are indispensable in ensuring that the working people enjoy the rights granted by the state.
"Our country's public health system is most advantageous and people-oriented in that it values the people's lives most and the state takes responsibility for the health of the entire population. Yet, in terms of material and technical foundations, the public health sector is weaker than any other sector; hospital facilities in particular are outdated.
"That is why, long ago, I conceived a plan of building a first-rate general hospital that would perform the functions and role of the backbone in our country's public health sector, and I ensured that necessary preparations were made for several years.
"The Pyongyang General Hospital is a modern medical centre, whose architectural style, components and space environment are designed to help patients remain stable both mentally and psychologically, and which meets the general requirements of modern architecture. The specialized facilities and equipment of all its systems meet all health and hygienic standards, and they help ensure the scientific accuracy and smoothness of medical service.
"The construction of the hospital was costly, but I am really pleased that we now have a perfect hospital that can provide our people with an excellent environment for medical treatment and advanced medical service. And my pride in waging the revolution is greater than ever before. [...]
"I would like to affirm that the vitality of the policies pursued by the Workers' Party of Korea lies in their absolutely people-oriented character. Availing myself of this happy opportunity, I would like to express my special thanks to the officers and soldiers of our Guards Unit, all the construction workers and the staff of design institutions, who have made devoted, sincere efforts to build this excellent hospital, true to the Party's policy and decision on the development of the public health sector. Also, I would like to congratulate the officials, doctors, nurses and other employees of the hospital, who are present here in getting posted to work at this excellent hospital and with an ennobling mission of serving the people. [...]
"I expect that standard-bearers and dedicated personnel who will play the major role in modernizing the public health sector will be trained here, and that new models and fine experience in treatment, scientific research, service and management will be created here and will spread across the country."
Kim Jong Un called on the medical staff selected to work at the Pyongyang General Hospital to care for the state-of-the-art equipment and to constantly upgrade their knowledge and skills as they are not only entrusted to serve the people with the highest quality care but, as the Pyongyang General Hospital is a teaching hospital, to pass on their training and knowledge.
"As I mentioned before, all the duties of the Pyongyang General Hospital are of key importance in carrying out the public health revolution, many of which are pioneering projects involving new research, application, introduction and formulation. Currently, our projects are progressing slowly and inadequately, being bound by unrealistic methods of management and old-fashioned laws," Kim Jong Un added.
"We should go full steam ahead, without any further delay, with the work of fundamentally improving the established institutional mechanisms which, though remaining in force for several decades, have lost their vitality and bring no substantial benefit to the people, as well as the structural systems and irrational methods of operation which are not in keeping with the changing reality and hinder the development of the public health sector. [...] The word revolution itself means a struggle to replace everything old and backward with something new and advanced, and it inevitably goes with qualitative change.
"We must solve this problem without fail if we are to ensure that the results of the public health revolution, which we achieve with so much effort, make a substantial contribution to protecting the people's lives and promoting their health, and to provide a guarantee for the sustained and long-term development of our socialist public health sector which is responsible for the health of the entire population."
Kim Jong Un noted that the overall public health sector in the DPRK is weaker than other sectors because of wrong ways of thinking and methods of work that have been prevalent in health care and that solving this problem is part of the mission and responsibility of the public health law which is "designed to maintain the people-oriented character of our socialist public health care system and accelerate its development."
He said that "Hospitals should preferentially be prepared in both material and technological terms to introduce the latest achievements of medical science and technology into clinical work. This alone will provide the basis on which to develop the public health law of the country and advance its medical science and technology quickly."
He called on the Party central leadership to ensure that the Pyongyang General Hospital fully performs its mission as the central base in facilitating the development of the country's medical and other public health organs so as to realize the Party's intention of putting the public health care sector onto the most advanced level by strongly pushing ahead with its renovation.
In the course of his speech Kim Jong Un explained that in the architectural design of the hospital and the surrounding areas, down to the smallest detail, nothing had been left to chance in order to enhance the comfort and recovery of the patients and ensure their mental and physical well-being.
At the end of his speech to the hospital personnel and guests he noted:
"Today we have made a huge step forward in the journey for the public health revolution. Yet, this is only a new landmark and another starting point for us. Building modern health care facilities should be continued and steadily promoted until all the people in the country have full access to beneficial medical service."
"Comrades, let us work as hard as we can for a more beautiful future, when our people will enjoy a rich and cultured life in happiness maintaining their good health. I hope that the Pyongyang General Hospital will remain forever a facility that injects the vigour of life and inexhaustible vitality into our people, a place that defends their health and laughter." Kim Jong Un concluded.
