New York Times Tech Workers' Week-Long Strike
Picket on first day of strike, November 4, 2024
Hundreds of tech workers at the New York Times (NYT) walked off the job Monday, November 4, striking for more equitable wages, better job security, and flexibility around remote work. The Times Tech Guild has 675 workers represented by the NewsGuild of New York. Workers are also opposing intimidation by the Times, including demands that workers return to the office rather than work remotely as they have been.
This
was the largest-ever strike of tech workers in the U.S., according to
the NewsGuild. It was timed for Election Day when readership is up for
the Times.
Workers picketed outside the Times headquarters in downtown
Manhattan and were supported by the public. This was also evident in
subscribers boycotting the NYT Games app and the NYT Cooking app and
supporting instead the solidarity-themed games and recipes that
strikers put together.
The NewsGuild announced on November 11 that it had ended the strike, and workers will continue to fight for their demands as they negotiate a contract. In addition to pay increases, workers are demanding that they not be arbitrarily fired and calling for a "just cause" clause to contend with that.
The strike showed the strength of the workers and their broad public support and remains a weapon for the workers to utilize.
