Airport Workers in Charlotte, North Carolina Strike Thanksgiving Week

Charlotte Douglas International Airport workers in North Carolina, members of the Service Employees International Union's (SEIU) Airport Workers United, also went on strike during Thanksgiving weekend, one of the most traveled weeks of the year. They protested their poverty-level wages and demanded respect for their work. These workers are responsible for cleaning the airplanes, removing trash, assisting with wheelchairs throughout the airport, and more. They are essential to the functioning of the airport but are treated as though they are nothing, with low wages forcing many to work two to three jobs. Striking workers emphasized they can barely survive given the level of wages and disrespect.

The strike began Monday, November 25 and continued through the weekend. Workers organized a "Strikesgiving" lunch in place of the Thanksgiving meal that many could not afford to buy for their families. Strikers had signs saying, "Protect Us, Respect Us, Pay Us" and "More $$$ Now."
