Virtual Celebrations and Tributes

Under the conditions of the COVID-19 pandemic, the worldwide commemorations of Victory Day, including the Marches of the Immortal Regiment, commemorating all those who fought against Nazi fascism are taking place online. Despite the restrictions imposed by the pandemic conditions, the significance of this anniversary is such that around the world, people are finding innovative ways to collectively commemorate Victory Day and remember the tremendous sacrifices made for the cause of peace.

In Moscow, instead of the traditional Victory Day parade in Red Square, there is an air show and evening fireworks. Similarly displays are being held in 31 other cities throughout Russia.

Various cultural institutions in Russia have prepared online programs to involve the people in celebrations. For example, in Moscow, the online Glavarhiva Museum has been established with the contributions of Muscovites on life in Moscow during the Great Patriotic War. It features 7,500 wartime documents and artifacts, as well as rare footage of not only military events but also work behind the frontlines. Also in Moscow, the Museum of Victory on Poklonnaya Hill has prepared a special online program, tours of its halls, exhibitions and more. A new exhibition called "The Feat of the People," is being opened on the occasion of Victory Day, which can be seen on the museum's YouTube channel here. It shows the contribution made by the workers, scientists, doctors and journalists to the victory. Visitors can see a three-dimensional panorama and scenery of what happened in the war.

In Novgorod, the Regional House of Folk Art has launched video tours of the exhibition "What We Will Never Forget." The exhibition features the life in post-war Novgorod, as well as the combat gear of the soldiers of the Workers 'and Peasants' Red Army and their enemy.

In Sevastopol in Crimea, residents have been called on to come out onto their balconies with lighted candles for 10 minutes at 9:00 pm for an event called "Candle of Memory."
