Video: The War on Illiteracy
(33:06. Spanish audio with English subtitles. U.S. production, circa 2000)
This documentary recounts the historic 1961 campaign launched by Fidel to eliminate illiteracy in Cuba, and the deep-going effect it has had on Cuban society. Today, UNESCO reports Cuba’s literacy rate as 99.8 per cent, one of the highest in the world. Cuba’s work to end illiteracy continues in the present — thousands of Cuban literacy teachers have volunteered in countries around the world to share Cuba’s “Yo, Sí Puedo” (Yes, I can) teaching method.
