Montreal
Demonstration for the Right to Housing
Friday, October 7 — 3:00 pm
Square-Victoria Metro
Organized by: FRAPRU, RCLALQ and RAPISM
Two-thirds of Montreal households are renters, and the vast majority of them are low-income. Housing rights organizations are holding this demonstration prior to the Montreal municipal elections on November 7, 2021, to call on mayoral candidates to make the right to housing a priority.
Organizations in defence of housing rights report that “Property speculation, renovation, illegal repossessions, abusive rent increases, unhealthy conditions and a shortage of family housing are the lot of too many tenants. The amount of affordable rental housing stock is rapidly eroding and too little social housing is being built. In this context, many people find themselves in situations of residential instability and homelessness.
“The parties running in the Montreal municipal elections talk a lot about the difficulty of becoming a homeowner in Montreal and the lack of “affordable” housing that the private sector should be building. However, the housing that has been built recently, even when it is said to be affordable, is too small and, above all, far too expensive for low- and moderate-income tenants.
“The Montreal groups of FRAPRU, the Regroupement des comités logement et associations de locataires du Québec (RCLALQ Droit Au Logement) and the Réseau d’aide aux personnes seules et itinérantes de Montréal (RAPSIM) are asking candidates to commit to the realization of housing rights in Montreal.”
