The Nobel Peace Project is an international Mail Art initiative founded over 20 years ago in Nobel, Ontario by artists Susan Gold and AG Smith as a response to the NATO bombing of Yugoslavia.
In 2020, for the first time, the Nobel Peace Project took on a theme directly connected to the Nobel Peace Prize and called for submissions to celebrate and support the nomination of Cuba’s Henry Reeve International Medical Brigade for the award in 2021.
The project’s co-founders say honouring the nomination of Cuba’s Henry Reeve Brigade is particularly fitting because Mail Art operates outside the market economy, as an alternative to art being viewed as a marketable object — not unlike Cuba’s international medical cooperation which promotes solidarity, justice and peace, with medical treatment not considered a commodity.
The organizers report the Mail Art on display in the storefront windows of one ten park Studio in downtown Windsor comes from 18 countries, including Cuba, often with heartfelt messages expressing support for the Henry Reeve Brigade, solidarity with Cuba, gratitude for Cuba’s work, and for an end to the blockade. The over 100 images and decorated envelopes will remain in the windows until just after MAY DAY 2021.
With no in-person gatherings able to be planned, the project will continue to be celebrated through online events and postings. A booklet is being created to document all the images and will be sent to the participants and others. Rather than store the images in the Nobel Peace Project’s boxed archive when the exhibition comes down, the organizers say they are willing to create mini traveling displays that can be made available to others. Inquiries/requests should be sent to sgold@uwindsor.ca
