Marielle Franco, a municipal councillor for the Socialism and Liberty Party (PSOL) in Rio de Janiero and her driver Anderson Gomes were assassinated on March 14th, 2018, just days after Marielle denounced military police abuse during violent operations in the city of Acari. She was targeted because of her opposition to the coup d’État, police brutality and extrajudicial killings.
The rally is taking place on the occasion of the first anniversary of her assassination in Brazil.
“We want justice! We want to know who ordered the killing and who carried it out!
“We want a fair process, without torture, with all the constitutional guarantees that all citizens are entitled to. That was Marielle’s fight and it remains ours.
“Never in the history of the country has the presidential cabinet been so closely linked to a political murder as with hers.
“We will therefore take to the streets of Montreal and join with the millions of others worldwide who are demanding a transparent investigation, so that the criminals involved in this cowardly execution are found.”
